Some of these fish can easily be caught without ever getting on a boat. Many of the sport fish are caught in the Emerald Coast waters off the beach pier and jetty. This type of fishing is usually best between the months of April and October. Fishing in Choctawahtchee Bay is great year round, and you can expect to even find Blue Crabs along the shore.

Another type of fishing, called offshore trolling, generally takes place about 30 miles southwest of Destin, and usually aims to catch very large fish. The best months for such fishing are typically August through October. These types of fishing expeditions can sometimes last quite a while – with a fish dragging the line for hours until you finally reel it in.

Yet another half day to full day commitment is deep sea fishing. Destin is great for bottom fishing year round, with charters available for such an excursion. Whatever type of fishing you decide to partake in, you'll be hooked on this sport!

In terms of Destin fishing activities, a favorite pastime of locals and visitors alike is the Fishing Rodeo. Since Destin is the bill fishing capital of the northern Gulf, the Destin Rodeo is held here, and is regarded as the ultimate fishing tournament for anglers. During October, over 30,000 anglers compete for over $100,000 in prizes – bringing home trophies, merchandise, and big catches! This is a great event to take part in or witness, all taking place just minutes away from your Destin condo rental.

Once you partake in a fishing expedition, you will understand what the initial draw to Destin was – it's known as the “world's luckiest fishing village” after all! Before the attraction to white, sandy beaches and world class vacation rentals became the focus of Destin, fishing was the stronghold and the major attraction for most. In fact, Destin is named after Captain Leonard Destin, who arrived in 1850, and took hold of the commercial fishing industry when it was in it's infancy. Today, Destin echoes this sentiment with it's numerous fishing charter companies.
