Usually 30A vacationers spend time soaking up the sun’s rays on our beautiful beaches, luxuriating in the glowing emerald toned gulf, swimming in a pool, relaxing in a bubbling hot tub, eating savory seafood, drinking tropical drinks at lively bars, playing golf, fishing, taking a sunset or dolphin cruise and exploring other delightful diversions. Whew!
However, one of the more exciting experiences and the latest amusement is to explore the vast natural wilderness along the shores of Choctawhatchee Bay with 30A Airboat Adventures. You may have seen an airboat on a National Geographic TV special about the Everglades or some reality show about catching gators in Louisiana - but have you ever been on one?
Licensed by the US Coast Guard, Captain Daniel recently started the 30A Airboat Adventure tour after over 20-years of powering boats with up to 100 tonnage. He has a passion for marine life, fishing, and the outdoors, so this business was a perfect match since he likes to experience nature up close. The usually serene waters of the beautiful bay provide the perfect backdrop. It spans 30-miles across from east to west and four to five miles north to south where it empties into the gulf at Destin’s East Pass.
The mighty Choctawhatchee River flows down from the northeast into a grassy massive marshland area with scattered islands situated in a complex web of winding tributaries that are available for outstanding Eco Tourist exploration. Once you get out there the pristine, untouched natural surroundings make you feel like you are in a true wilderness, which of course you are! Towering Cypress Trees draped with Spanish Moss, clumps of Palmetto Palms, Live Oaks, Pine, and ancient fallen logs harbor an abundance of wildlife. You may see Great Blue Herons, Snowy White Egrets, Pelicans, Osprey Falcons, American Bald Eagles, sunning turtles and even a few alligators float by. The water has an abundance of Shrimp, Oysters, Blue Crab, Flounder, Redfish, Bluefish, Bass, Trout, and Mullet. Pods of dolphin frolic on the open bay since the waters here are among the cleanest in the entire nation.
This exciting excursion has really caught on since juried voters for Perfect in South Walton proclaimed 30A Airboat Adventures as “The Best of the Best” in 2017 and a “Platinum Award for Best Outdoor Adventure” in 2018. A multitude of different guests have given reviews of high praise including such accolades as: “A great family adventure”; “Super clean boat, comfy seats, and a classy guide”; “amazing sunset trip”; “both exhilarating and relaxing!”; “We loved our adventure!”; “fun and the scenery was beautiful”; “highly recommend and great for all ages” and “A definite must-see attraction!”
Daniel offers customized private tours for up to six airboat adventurers. They may vary in length to include trips across Choctawhatchee Bay, the enchanting river tributaries or trips through the Intracoastal Waterway to the West Bay Grand Lagoon in Panama City Beach. Special rates are provided for children 12 years of age or under, but they must be able to be seated with both feet reaching the floor of the airboat. Pricing varies depending upon timing, so call for specifics.
Airboats have a roaring fan motor, so earmuffs are provided for use when the vessel is at full speed which usually tops out at 25 mph for safety. It also takes slow glides through certain wetland areas, past scenic shorelines, during sensational sunsets over the bay and for unique photo ops. You should wear sun protection since there is no shade and take care of personal business beforehand since there are no bathrooms available. Dress comfortably but be sure to bring some kind of wrap during the cooler times of the year since the open bay can be chilly. A small storage bin is provided for valuables, but you are encouraged only to bring bare necessities, (like your camera phone. Ha!), since the captain is not responsible for any loss or damage. Drinking, eating, smoking, or vaping are not allowed on the airboat.
It is recommended that reservations be made in advance since there are only six passengers, however, sometimes openings are still available on the same day of a requested trip during off seasons. Customers must cancel at least 48 hours prior to the launch date in order to receive a full refund. If the weather is unfavorable, the captain may call off the trip which, can be rescheduled or a full refund will be issued. No-shows will not be refunded. Customer may make changes to their reservation without any fees as long as it is outside the 48 hour cancellation period. More information and reservations may be made by calling 850-596-6345.
