If there's one thing that we can all agree on, it is that sometimes life is hard. And in those tougher moments, it feels good to escape the stress— even if only for a little while. We all have our favorite ways to decompress, but one of the best ways (in our unbiased opinion) is simply getting yourself in beach mode. Fortunately, there are plenty of ways to feel those beach vibes, even from home, whether it's planning a vacation, browsing beach photos on the web, or watching a beachy movie.
If a movie sounds like your thing, we've got you covered. Here are seven funny movies that will get you in beach mode!
1. Couples Retreat
Starring Vince Vaughn, Malin Akerman, and other popular stars, Couples Retreat is a romantic comedy that centers around four couples enjoying a getaway at a tropical resort. Though one of the couples is there to work on their marriage, the three other couples are unaware that the resort's marriage therapy sessions were a mandatory part of the retreat. Hilarity ensues, mixed with heartwarming moments of growth. All of this, combined with the beautiful backdrop of an island paradise, make for a fun movie that will have you wishing you, too, were living it up at the beach.
2. Forgetting Sarah Marshall
Forgetting Sarah Marshall is a 2008 film starring Jason Segel as Peter Bretter and Kristen Bell as Sarah Marshall. In order to deal with his recent breakup from Sarah, Peter jets off on a beach vacation. Unfortunately for him, Peter finds out that Sarah is staying at the same resort…and she's brought her new beau. Throughout the film, Peter experiences the beauty of Hawaii, while trying to get Sarah off his mind. The story is funny, satisfying, and touching, and the scenery is breathtaking. After watching this movie, you'll want to visit the beautiful islands— though probably under different circumstances than leading man Peter!
3. 50 First Dates
Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler star side-by-side in this romantic comedy set in Hawaii. 50 First Dates is a funny and emotional film about womanizer Henry (Sandler) falling in love with Lucy (Barrymore), a woman who suffered a terrible car accident resulting in short-term memory loss. With Lucy forgetting who Henry is every morning, Henry devises a plan to get Lucy to fall in love with him every day. Their dates are both amusing and moving, and the beachy background provides a beautiful landscape for this love story to take place.
Journey Through Biodiversity: Black Bears, The Emerald Coast, & Conservation Tales.
4. Just Go With It
Just Go With It is another Adam Sandler movie, but this time he co-stars with Jennifer Anniston. Danny (Sandler) is a plastic surgeon, and Katherine (Anniston) is his assistant. In this entertaining tale, these two are joined by Danny's girlfriend and cousin on an impromptu Hawaii vacation, in which Sandler tries to cover up a lie he told his girlfriend. In a twist of events, they run into Katherine's college rival at their resort, prompting Katherine and Danny to pretend that they're happily married. The web of lies makes for a mess of comical, awkward, and cute moments. And, of course, the island creates a dreamy setting.
If you've been staring at the edge of the water for as long as you can remember, this adorable animated movie is for you! Loved by kids and adults alike, Moana tells the tale of an island-bound girl who longs to explore the wide-open ocean. Despite her responsibilities as the chief's daughter, Moana embarks on an epic journey across the ocean to return the heart of Te Fiti. She teams up with demigod Maui (albeit grudgingly at first), and endures harsh storms, a coconut pirate attack, and an excursion into a giant crab's lair. The vibrant animation depicts the beauty of a Polynesian paradise, while the music adds to the island vibe.
6. Mamma Mia
Mamma Mia delightfully combines a Greek island setting with ABBA music to tell the story of a bride-to-be searching for her real father. Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) realizes that her real father could be one of three men her mother Donna (Meryl Streep) had dalliances with at about the same time. In an effort to find out who her birth father is, Sophie invites all three men to the wedding. Through song and dance, the hilarious and sweet tale is revealed on the beautiful Greek island.
7. Weekend at Bernie's
A 1989 classic, Weekend at Bernie's, is a story about two friends, Richard and Larry, trying to prove themselves at work. After discovering someone has been embezzling money from the company, their boss Bernie invites them to his beach house for the weekend. The trip isn't what they expect! When the boys arrive at the beach house, they find that Bernie has been murdered. Unbeknownst to the friends, their boss was behind the embezzlement and planned to have them killed; however, Bernie's partners decided Bernie needed to go, too. They hilariously try to pretend their boss is alive, all while being chased by the hitman. But hey, at least they get to experience the beach while on their "adventures"!
