Living in Destin and along the Emerald Coast, we see a wide variety of people on a daily basis. We see families come from all over the world to vacation in paradise, spending their time building sandcastles in the crystal sands and splashing in the waves. We see couples of all ages, from honeymooners to lifelong sweethearts celebrating their 50th anniversary - and single travelers looking for adventure.
Each of these coastal visitors is unique – from where they came from to where they’re going from their personalities to their life experiences.
But do you know what each of these individuals has in common? The saltwater running through their veins!
That’s right. Everyone who visits our little oasis is a beach person. A sand-between-your-toes, soaking-up-the-sun, it’s-five-o’clock-somewhere, beach person. And that’s a fact!
So, what traits make someone a beach person? Read on to find out… and to see for sure that you’re a beach person!
You’d Rather Wear Flip Flops Than Tennis Shoes
Would you rather wear flip flops than lace up your tennis shoes? Or, better yet, do you love to let those piggies free and go barefoot? You’re probably a beach person! Flip flops are basically synonymous with relaxation. There is nothing more freeing than exposing your feet to the tropical air. When you’re in flip flops or barefoot, you don’t have to worry about having smothered or sweaty feet, making it much easier to relax, which is what being at the beach is all about. The ease of kicking off your flip flops means you can bury your toes in the sand that much faster. It means dipping your toes in the smooth, warm, emerald Gulf waves as soon as you hit the beach. With flip flops or your bare feet, you also don’t have to worry about getting sand stuck in your shoes for days, or even weeks, after your vacation is over. Flip flops for the win!

You Love Water So Much that Your Friends Think You’re a Fish
Have your friends ever called you a fish? Or a mermaid? Or any other sea creature because you’d much rather be swimming in the water than hanging out about on land? That’s the sign of a beach person! The Gulf Coast in Northwest Florida is particularly good for you human-fish types. The miles of Gulf water are warm and smooth, perfect for a pleasant day of splashing, swimming, snorkeling, or scuba diving. It’s easy to spend hours and hours floating along the waves, soaking up the sun, and getting pruney fingers and toes. Who knows, maybe you’ll actually sprout gills and a tail so you can spend forever in your favorite watery world! Okay, so that’s not true, but one can dream. Right?!
You’re an Extrovert
Yes, being an extrovert actually indicates that you are more likely to be a beach person. It’s scientifically proven. Don’t believe us? A study titled Personality and geography: Introverts prefer mountains looked into the correlation of personality and geographical preference. Through five separate experiments, the study found that introverts prefer the mountains, while extroverts would rather be at the beach. Extroverts are considered outgoing. They love to socialize and tend to hang out in areas where there’s more room to talk and meet people. That’s where the beach comes in. Compared to the mountains, beaches are typically noisier. There are more opportunities to socialize. There are more people-watching opportunities. It’s easier to make new friends. That is why, in general, extroverts tend to gravitate toward the beach.
You Prefer Soaking up the Sun to Trekking in the Snow
“I’m walking on sunshine…and don’t I feel good!” Okay, this one is a no-brainer. If you’d rather spend your time under the sun, soaking up your daily dose of vitamin D and getting a suntan, the beach is your place. Sure, you might like playing in the snow every so often for the novelty of it. But when it comes down to it, you want to sit on a colorful beach towel with your toes in the warm sand, beach cocktail in hand, and the sun shining down. And we don’t blame you! That’s what we would call paradise.

You Like to Exercise in the Great Outdoors
The beach offers so many opportunities for outdoor exercise. So, if working out in the beautiful outdoors with a perfect view is your thing, you might try hanging out at the beach. Destin and the Emerald Coast, specifically, have so many exercise options. Paddleboard the glassy Gulf waters at sunrise or take to the dune lakes and paddleboard under the noon sun. There are even classes for paddleboard yoga. But be sure to take an anchor with you, or the workout will be harder than you think! Kayaking and swimming are also great ways to get your daily workout in. If you’d rather exercise on land, try running on the beach. Running in the sand is a sure way to get your sweat on and work those calf muscles. You might also try beach volleyball or frisbee. Or, get away from the sand for a while and go for a bike ride or hike along the many winding nature trails. Not only will you get a workout, but you will also get to enjoy the beauty of the coast.
If you said “Heck Yes” to all of these, then you are probably a human-fish with sunshine hair and blood made of saltwater. Of course, if you can relate to even one (or more) of these traits, then you are most certainly a beach person! We’re looking forward to seeing all you beach people at the most perfect beach in the world soon.
