Leeward is a sailing term meaning "on or toward the side to which the wind is blowing," and Key describes "an offshore island, especially in the Gulf of Mexico." Destin and Miramar Beach are positioned on a key, so to speak, since they are located five miles offshore from the mainland. This region is defined by the Choctawhatchee Bay on one side and the Gulf of Mexico on the other. Leeward Key is also on Scenic Gulf Drive, which almost always offers refreshing, on-shore breezes even on the warmest summer days. However, this only describes part of the picture as far as Leeward Key is concerned since this location also offers white sand beaches and stunning views of the shimmering waters beyond to the horizon.
This prime locale is less than a minute by car to the nostalgic, early 19th century-inspired Crab Trap restaurant at the James Lee Beach Park towards the west and the candy-colored, famous Pompano Joe's towards the east. Both of these are situated right on the beach. Two other restaurants are within easy walking distance, Captain Dave's and Kenny D's, "just a stone's throw away," almost diagonally across from Leeward Key towards the southwest. The iconic beachfront Captain Dave's features fresh seafood combos and platters with floor-to-ceiling windows that look out upon the Gulf. This well-established restaurant has been serving patrons for literally decades.
Across the street from it is Kenny D's, which specializes in oysters and cold beer. (Their Oyster Rockefeller is excellent!) Owned and run by a New Orleans native, Kenny D's also features authentic, award-winning seafood gumbo and Cajun-styled food. They have fun, entertaining live music on Friday and Saturday nights on their outdoor deck. Everyone is invited to participate and sing along.

At Leeward Key the are two swimming pools, one of which is perched beachfront on a dune overlooking the shore. It is lushly landscaped at its entrance with big palm trees that dance and sway to ocean breezes. It also has a nice-sized sundeck, bathroom facilities, showers, and steps that take you right down to the sand. This private gulf front pool is also heated during the cooler winter months, which is fantastic! As you sit in the warm pool, you can watch the steam rise up as you hear the crescendo-like sound of the surf below.
At the other pool next to the Leeward Key building, there is a large deck with outdoor grills in case you want to create your own savory surf n turf meal. This pool also has indoor bathroom facilities. There is also a fitness room at Leeward Key with weight machines to get an active workout.

Since Leeward Key 806 is a special corner unit, the main living area includes double window views towards the east with four floor-to-ceiling windows and sliding glass doors facing south. This leads to a beach view balcony that has gorgeous site lines in both directions, including the crystal blue private Leeward Key pool on the Gulf. The beachside balcony is the perfect place to sit during the summer months when the full moons rise right up out of the water to the east and transverses the beach before setting in the west. During the late fall and winter months, the sun rises and sets over the Gulf providing peaceful, heavenly views of the sky, which are then reflected mirror-like on the water.
In the main living area in Leeward Key 806, bright tile floors are accented by a plush, latte-colored couch and love seat. The couch folds out into a queen-sized bed for the kids or extra guests. A large flatscreen TV sits in the corner so that you can watch all your favorite shows and movies while looking out upon the Gulf simultaneously.
A large wooden dining table sits in the center of this room with the same incredible views. It has ample space for everyone with six pastel-colored striped chairs, which can easily accommodate a nice little dinner party if you feel like eating in. Three additional seats at a nearby open breakfast bar look into the nicely equipped kitchen.
The carpeted, comfortable Primary bedroom suite has a king-sized bed and a double window with southerly Gulf vistas. An adjacent private bath includes a garden tub, so break out the champagne and sink down for some special, deep water relaxation.
The guest bedroom has two twin-sized beds and an adjacent bathroom that also doubles as the powder room off the hallway.

Located just a few doors down, still on the same desirable eighth floor, we come to Leeward Key 802. This condo features large floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors that look out over the beautiful Gulf's green waters. The large living area is further enhanced by its east wall, covered in mirrors that reflect the view over the beachside pool. You can gaze from the balcony onto the bright white sands and jewel-toned shores. You'll love relaxing here; it's a quiet place with room for reflection - and it faces south, so you won't miss a single sunset!
Richly appointed throughout, the interior is finished in sand-colored walls and parchment-toned flooring, enhancing the property's tropical decor. Once in the living room, one finds a lightly toned couch and matching loveseat. An accent chair beside the balcony adds a pop of color. Cozy seating centered around a cocktail table faces a flatscreen TV mounted atop a hardwood table. Views of the beach abound through the large glass doors. Relax and enjoy the company of your fellow guests.
Leeward Key 802 has a casual dining room accented by high-backed chairs and a large hardwood table. Have a family feast or an intimate breakfast for two; the kitchen bar features ample seating and is a great place to prepare drinks for the shore.
Entering the primary bedroom is welcoming; enjoy the king-size bed, seating area, and TV. The teal-blue accent wall creates a calming mood. The master bath even includes dual vanities and a tub/shower combo perfect for your inner romantic.
The guest bedroom is equally comfortable and features a king-size bed. Tropical décor, cottage-style furnishings, and a blue accent - all combine to create a relaxed atmosphere. The room has access to a full hall bath that doubles as a convenient powder room.
