Blue Mountain Beach boasts award-winning beaches and marks the highest elevation above the entire Gulf of Mexico. Hundreds of years ago, Spanish explorers who were mapping the gulf coast from far offshore to avoid being attacked by Native Americans noticed what they thought was a tall "blue mountain" flanked by a flat "beach" and gave it this name. They actually saw the tall hills here covered with indigenous Blue Lupine flowers. These forested hills rise high above the Gulf and wrap around a rare precious coastal dune lake. These kinds of lakes are a precious natural treasure and found hardly anywhere else in the world. They provide a habitat for abundant wildlife, fish, and fowl. This arty, somewhat Bohemian hamlet is quite captivating with a few locally-owned restaurants that include friendly bars, a bakery, an old fashioned ice cream parlor, and the oldest health food store in the county called "For the Health of It" which features organic produce, a juice bar along with massage therapy. It is minutes away from coastal villages like Santa Rosa Beach and Seaside, which feature restaurants, beach bars, fashion boutiques, specialty shops, art galleries, amphitheater concerts as well as fun festivals.
