For some, golf is a game of patience, precision, and a deep respect for the sport's storied history. For others—let's be real, for Dad—mini-golf is just as serious. The putter is gripped with intensity, windmill blades are timed with military precision, and every bank shot is approached like it's a major tournament moment. Meanwhile, the rest of the family is just trying to sink a few putts without launching their ball into the nearest water hazard.
Ocean Reef Resorts guests receive a special Reef Rewards discounts at Big Kahuna's in Destin which is a perfect place for both mini golf and other family fun. It is located on the north side of Highway 98 just east of Holiday Isle and west of Sundestin.This tropical theme park is a Destin landmark and a favorite family destination for amusements. Big Kahuna's Mini Golf Course is one of the best around. It actually has three courses, each of which feature eighteen holes. It is a magical tropical world unto itself since lush landscaping includes a dense jungle like canopy above while beautiful flowers, sculpted trees and meandering trails go along the course's mini fairways below. Besides the fun of engaging in miniature golf the surroundings are a visual delight. Wooden bridges wind their way across gurgling creeks. Several waterfalls splash over rocks that delightfully enhance the tropical feel. Part of the course even makes its way through a dark tunnel but don't worry, giant authentic Tiki God statues are there to help protect you and may even bring good luck!
Besides the mini golf courses, Destin's Big Kahuna's is known especially for a wonderful watery world complete with awesome slides, rivers for tubing, simulated white water rapids, waterfalls, spurting fountains and even some big wave action. They also have a raceway track for the kids and young at heart where you can pretend to be your own favorite NASCAR driver. A number of colorful, numbered, mock race cars zip around the large oval course. Adults can try the "Cyclone" or the "Sky Coaster" thrill rides for kicks. The Cyclone straps you on to a harness that zips you up to the top of an eighty-five foot tall pole in seconds. Once there you are sent twirling around in the air on a 160 foot wide propeller. The Sky Coaster launches you 100 feet into the air where it begins to swing sideways. This ride swoops back and forth toward the ground at speeds up to 60mph providing a true adrenaline rush. Since most of Big Kahuna's guests spend a full day at the park there are changing rooms, bathroom facilities, showers and locker rentals available. Three restaurants and additional snack stands are scattered throughout the complex.
The mini golf course is open daily from 2pm until 9pm March 22nd thru April 11th. It is open weekends only throughout the month of May and daily again June 1st thru August 8th 2 pm until 10pm. August 9th thru August 22nd it reverts back to 2pm until 9pm and is only open on weekend August 23rd thru Labor Day.
Another great Destin mini golf course is at The Track Family Recreational Center which is located in Destin on the north side
of Highway 98 just west of Silver Shells and the super Wal-Mart. Their mini golf course gets a Four Star Rating on Trip Advisor with comments like "fun for the whole family", "the mini golf was great" and "action packed fun." Big sculptures of jungle animals create a fun tropical theme. There are also shimmering waterfalls and dark tunnels that you have to go through in order to follow your ball across the course. Like Big Kahuna's, The Track also features lots of other family amusements. They provide a dazzling carnival type atmosphere which includes a colorful carousel, Ferris wheel, Go Karts, Kiddie Karts, a ride on a cute old fashioned train especially designed for the little ones called The Rio Grande, Spin Tops, Water Bumper Tube rides, Swings and even a Video Arcade. The Track is open daily throughout the year although somewhat limited off season. From Memorial Day thru Labor Day it is open daily from 10am until 10pm.
For all of our Ocean Reef Resort guests staying at the Sandestin Resort in Miramar Beach there is a wonderful mini golf course right on the grounds of this gorgeous resort. It is called The Dunes Putting Course located on the undulating lushly landscaped "dunes" on the gulf side near Beachside I & II, Westwinds, and Beachwalk Villas. This eighteen hole course has mini fairways that measure between twenty-five and sixty feet in length. This is an adventurous fun challenge since it is a Par 51 course. Various contoured holes of fun are rated between two and four par each. It is challenging since there are multiple water hazards, sugar white sand traps, fairway dune mounds, changes in elevation and even a few tricky man made golf ball obstacles. This course is open seasonally from March thru Mid September and hours vary.
