Destin is DELIGHTFUL in December!
If your idea of December is heavy coats, gray skies, and slushy streets, Destin feels like a plot twist in the best possible way. Here, “winter white” means sugar-soft sand, twinkling holiday lights reflect off the Gulf instead of snow, and your biggest weather decision is whether you need a light sweater or just a long-sleeve tee for your evening walk on the beach.
Daytime temperatures typically hover in the 60s, evenings slip into the 40s, and the earlier sunsets cast a long golden glow across the water. Crowds thin out, traffic eases, and restaurant waits shrink, but the energy doesn’t disappear—it simply shifts into a cozier, more local rhythm. December brings boat parades on the harbor, tree lightings, Santa sightings, Nights of Lights at Baytowne Wharf, and plenty of time to stroll the shoreline or sneak in some outlet shopping between events.
For more than forty years, our Ocean Reef Resorts team has watched guests turn December beach trips into a tradition—coming back year after year for the quieter pace, festive atmosphere, and value-packed stays. If you’re wondering what it’s really like here this time of year—and whether it might be the right fit for your family—let’s walk through what you can expect: festive events, unforgettable sunsets, great shopping, and surprisingly comfortable accommodations at some of the best values of the year.
Fun Things to Do

December in Destin is all about twinkling lights, hometown traditions, and uniquely coastal holiday experiences. You can spend one evening under a canopy of choreographed lights at Baytowne Wharf, another watching a classic small-town Christmas parade roll down Harbor Boulevard, and yet another with boats glowing across Destin Harbor and fireworks reflecting off the water. Whether you’re visiting for a long weekend or the whole month, there’s always something festive to enjoy.
All December
– Nights of Lights at Baytowne Wharf
Throughout December, the Village of Baytowne Wharf in Sandestin transforms into a glowing holiday village. Each evening, a festive light show illuminates the Village tree and Events Plaza Lawn with dancing lights set to holiday music, with shows at 6 pm, 7 pm, and 8 pm. Guests spread out blankets on the lawn, stroll the cobblestone streets with hot cocoa or a cocktail in hand, and snap photos under the sparkling canopy of lights. On select Wednesdays leading up to Christmas, the holiday concert series adds live music and visits with Santa, giving families an extra reason to linger in the village after dark.
December 2
– Festival of Trees at Grand Boulevard
Just east of Destin in Miramar Beach, Grand Boulevard at Sandestin hosts its beloved Festival of Trees on Tuesday, December 2, 2025, from 4:00 to 6:30 pm in Grand Park. Dozens of beautifully decorated trees—each created by a local non-profit—line the park, and guests can stroll through, vote for their favorites, and enjoy the festive atmosphere. It’s an easy, family-friendly way to kick off the month and combine holiday cheer with a bit of shopping and dining along the boulevard.
December 4
– Destin Christmas Tree Lighting
The season officially kicks off at the Destin Community Center on December 4, 2025, when the city hosts its annual Christmas Tree Lighting at 6 pm. Local choirs and performers set a joyful tone, Santa stops by for photos, and families are invited to bring a non-perishable food item to help support neighbors in need. It’s a warm, welcoming tradition that brings the whole community together.
Weekends, November 29–December 21
– Visits with Santa at HarborWalk Village
If you have little ones in tow, HarborWalk Village on the Destin Harbor is a must. On Saturdays and Sundays from November 29 through December 21, 2025, Santa makes regular appearances from 1 pm to 4 pm for photos and wish-list chats. The harborfront setting, live entertainment, and shops decorated for the holidays make it easy to turn a quick Santa visit into an entire afternoon by the water.
December 13
– City of Destin Christmas Parade & Mistletoe Market
On Saturday, December 13, 2025, the City of Destin’s Christmas Parade steps off at 10 am. This year’s theme, “Seashells and Sleigh Bells,” brings out creative floats, marching bands, dance troupes, and community groups. The parade begins at Destin Methodist Church on Beach Drive, then winds its way west along Harbor Boulevard (Highway 98) to Stahlman Avenue. Families line the route with chairs and blankets, kids wave for candy and throws, and the whole town feels like a classic holiday postcard.
Later that same day, HarborWalk Village hosts the Mistletoe Market from 12 pm to 8 pm. Local vendors set up along the waterfront with handmade gifts, art, and seasonal treats, so you can browse for presents, enjoy live music, and soak in the harbor views under the holiday lights.
December 14
– Holly Jolly at the Harbor & Holiday Boat Parade
On Sunday, December 14, 2025, Destin’s Holly Jolly at the Harbor begins at 11 am at Captain Royal Melvin Heritage Park on the harbor. Parks and Recreation hosts market-style activities through the afternoon, along with cookie decorating, kids’ crafts, live music, and a visit from Santa around 4 pm. It’s a relaxed, family-focused way to ease into one of Destin’s biggest nights of the season.
That evening, the 39th Annual Holiday Boat Parade lights up Destin Harbor starting at 6 pm. Fishing vessels, charter boats, and private yachts are decked out in elaborate light displays as they cruise from the Boshamps area along the harbor past HarborWalk Village. It’s one of the most memorable sights of the season, with the reflections of the boats shimmering on the water. After the parade, fireworks burst over the harbor, and HarborWalk Village keeps the celebration going with live entertainment and a fire-spinning show on the main stage.

Spectacular Sunsets
Destin sits on a narrow peninsula between the open Gulf and the broad sweep of Choctawhatchee Bay, which runs roughly east–west just north of town. This geography is what makes our sunsets so memorable. For much of late spring through early fall, the sun appears to drop toward the bay, but by late November and December, it shifts south and sets directly over the Gulf. In winter, you’re getting that classic “sun melts into the water” horizon line that people imagine when they picture a beach sunset on the Emerald Coast.
In December, the sun typically sets between about 4:45 and 5:00 pm in Destin, with just a little over ten hours of daylight each day. That early sunset time pairs perfectly with the season’s cooler, comfortable weather—average highs hover in the low 60s, with evenings settling into the 40s. The combination of lower humidity, crisp air, and a low sun angle often produces especially vivid color: oranges and pinks near the horizon, purples and deep blues higher in the sky, all reflected off the clear Gulf water and bright white sand. It’s one of the reasons photographers and snowbirds alike rave about winter skies here.
Because December sits firmly in Destin’s off-season, you can enjoy these sunsets without the peak-summer crowds. The beaches are quieter, boardwalks feel more relaxed, and it’s easy to find space for a romantic stroll along the shoreline or a family photo session as the sky lights up from west to east. Gulf-front restaurants and rooftop bars time their happy hours to this “golden window,” so you’ll see locals and visitors gathered on decks and patios with appetizers and cocktails in hand, waiting for that final green flash or last burst of color over the water. Add in the glow of holiday lights from nearby resorts and harbors, and December sunsets in Destin feel less like a daily occurrence and more like a nightly event.
Christmas Shopping

Lots of our guests enjoy doing a little shopping when they’re not at the beach or exploring the area. In December, it becomes an even bigger draw. Holiday décor, special events, and serious savings turn Destin and Miramar Beach into a coastal shopping hub, with three major destinations leading the way for both everyday essentials and Christmas gifts: Destin Commons, Silver Sands Premium Outlets, and Grand Boulevard at Sandestin.
Destin Commons
Destin Commons is a premier open-air lifestyle center and a long-time local favorite for shopping, dining, and entertainment. This roughly 500,000-square-foot village sits at the northeast corner of Emerald Coast Parkway and the Mid-Bay Bridge Road, making it easy to reach from just about anywhere in Destin. Anchored by Bass Pro Shops, Belk, AMC Destin Commons 14, and Uncle Buck’s Fishbowl & Grill, it features more than 80–90 shops and restaurants, including national names like Sephora, lululemon, H&M, Victoria’s Secret, and Whole Foods alongside local boutiques.
Architecturally, it still has that “storybook village” feel, with turrets, fountains, murals, and palm-lined pedestrian streets. In December, Destin Commons leans into the season with a towering Christmas tree, festive lights, and holiday programming that often includes tree lightings, live music, and visits from Santa. Outdoor speakers play seasonal music, families snap photos in front of the decorations, and it’s easy to combine gift shopping with a relaxed dinner, a movie, and maybe a turn at the bowling lanes in Uncle Buck’s. If you want a one-stop place to shop, dine, and let the kids burn off some energy, this is it.
Silver Sands Premium Outlets
Just a few miles east of Destin in Miramar Beach, Silver Sands Premium Outlets is the area’s outlet powerhouse and one of the largest designer outlet centers in the country. Home to around 110 designer and name-brand stores, it’s built for value-driven shopping, with everyday savings that can reach up to 65% off regular retail pricing. You’ll find a deep lineup of sought-after brands for clothing, shoes, handbags, and accessories—think Coach Outlet, Tory Burch, Kate Spade New York, Michael Kors, Nike, Polo Ralph Lauren, J.Crew Factory, Saks OFF 5TH, and more—plus housewares and specialty stores.
During the Christmas shopping season, this center gets especially busy as both locals and visitors come in to “power shop” for gifts. With so many retailers in one place, it’s easy to tackle multiple people on your list in a single visit. To make the experience smoother, plan to arrive earlier in the day, especially on weekends, or consider using rideshare from your vacation rental to skip the parking hunt. Between stores, you can refuel at on-site restaurants, coffee spots, and snack stands, then head back out with bags in hand and serious savings on the receipts.
Grand Boulevard
A short drive east of Silver Sands brings you to Grand Boulevard at Sandestin, an upscale town-center environment that blends shopping, dining, entertainment, and events. Lush landscaping, Royal Palms, pocket parks, and fountains give the whole area a polished, walkable feel. Here you’ll find a curated mix of national and regional retailers, galleries, and boutiques, along with an impressive dining scene that includes spots like Another Broken Egg Café for brunch, P.F. Chang’s for Asian-inspired dining, Tommy Bahama Restaurant & Bar for island-style fare and cocktails, and Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar for special-occasion dinners.
Grand Boulevard is also home to AMC Boulevard 10 Cinema, a state-of-the-art movie theater with multiple screens, reserved seating, and premium formats, as well as the Emerald Coast Theatre Company for live performances. In December, the whole boulevard gets a holiday glow with seasonal decorations, tree displays, and events such as the Festival of Trees and holiday markets. It’s an excellent place to combine higher-end gift shopping with a nice meal and a movie or show, all in a setting that feels more like an intimate town center than a traditional mall.
Taken together, Destin Commons, Silver Sands Premium Outlets, and Grand Boulevard give December visitors a full spectrum of shopping options—from outlet deals and big-box favorites to boutique finds and fine dining—all within a short drive of the beach.

Enjoy a White Christmas

A “White Christmas” in Destin looks a little different—but once you’ve traded slush for sugar-white sand, it’s hard to imagine going back. Instead of shoveling snow, you’re walking along a quiet shoreline in a light jacket. Instead of scraping ice off the windshield, you’re watching boats wrapped in holiday lights glide across the harbor. Even on cooler days, the soft Gulf breeze and bright skies make it easy to spend time outside, whether you’re hunting seashells, exploring coastal dune lakes, or simply sitting on a balcony watching the sun sink into the water.
December also happens to be one of the best times of year for value. With lower nightly rates, fewer crowds, and more flexibility in your travel dates, you can often say yes to extras—like a larger home, a Gulf-front view, or a resort-style condo—that are in especially high demand during peak summer. Our curated collection of Destin Vacation Rentals spans everything from cozy condos for couples to spacious beachfront homes designed for the whole family, giving you plenty of ways to match your holiday vision with the perfect place to stay. When you’re ready to plan your own version of a White Christmas in Destin, we’ll be here to help you find the ideal spot and make this year’s holiday season your most relaxing one yet.
