Work. Work. Work. From putting food on the table to supporting our families, work is a part of life we all experience (or perhaps merely endure). Whether you enjoy your work or not, it is easy to feel bogged down with the everyday tasks, mundane details, and responsibilities that your job might require. Whatever it is, we all need a break sometimes. Thank goodness for vacation days, right?!
Vacation days are there so we can get that much-needed break. So we can take a breather from our jobs, relax, and come back refreshed and motivated to get our work done. Sounds great in theory, but have you ever felt guilty about taking those vacation days? You are not alone! A recent article by Travel & Leisure discusses the results of multiple surveys and studies regarding "vacation shaming." Vacation shaming is a term that describes work environments in which employees feel discouraged from using their vacation days. In today's work environments, many employees have reported feelings of nervousness, anxiety, or guilt when requesting time off, even when they have the vacation days to do so. Some feel dissuaded by managers or guilty for the amount of work that must be completed. Others have noted feelings of negativity from coworkers when it comes to going on a vacation. No matter the reason, it is time for this "vacation shaming" to end.
Over the years, many studies have demonstrated the benefits of taking time off, including stress reduction, improved productivity, better sleep, and prevented illness. Now is the time for you to reject the "vacation shaming" atmosphere, and instead celebrate the importance of vacation. Take those days off and reap the benefits!

Stress Reduction
How many of you have felt stressed while on the job? Probably more than a few of you! With deadlines, management pressures, and an overload of projects, the modern workplace can be a haven for anxiety. Chronic stress can take its toll on your body, making it difficult to fight infection, get enough sleep, or even manage basic work tasks. You may become irritable, anxious, and even depressed or lonely. This not only affects your work life, but your home life as well.
When you do not take breaks to get away from these stressful environments and situations, the stress will compound and become worse. However, taking regular vacations gives your body the space and time it needs to come down from those constant levels of high stress and anxiety. When you allow yourself time to recover, you will notice a huge difference in your attitude and stress levels. You will feel more relaxed, healthier, and both physically and mentally prepared to face your daily challenges. Do not let work stress control your life. Take vacations when you need them so that you are better equipped to manage your day and keep it stress-free!

Improved Productivity
Productivity is an important term in the workforce. Our ability to conduct work productively is the cornerstone of operating a successful business, and the pressure to be productive in any work place is prevalent.
At times, vacation and productivity can seem contradictory, but this could not be further from the truth. When trying to operate at peak levels at all times, we tend to burn out quickly, therefore reducing our ability to work productively. Continuous work with no breaks can often lead employees to feel blocked or distracted, making it more difficult to concentrate and reducing productive work. Vacations and regular breaks are the solution. By taking time off, you are able to give your brain a break and feel more energized to complete your tasks when you return. Vacations can unlock mental blocks, decrease distractions, and increase your overall attitude, all of which contribute to your work and general everyday productivity.

Better Sleep
Let's face it. Getting adequate sleep each night can be a struggle. With so much on our minds – from work to family to daily challenges – restless nights are not uncommon. Disrupted sleep can cause problems in the waking hours of the day, including reduced focus and alertness. Vacations can help prevent problems that arise from restless nights.
While on vacation, resetting your sleep pattern is made easy by eliminating habits that interrupt sleep, such as working late. Fortunately, vacation-improved sleep often carries over to when a person returns from vacation. This allows for better quality sleep at home, which in turn helps manage stress levels and improve attitude and productivity. Plus, who can complain about getting more and better sleep? Not us, that is for sure!

Prevent Illness
Did you know that stress can alter your immune system making you more susceptible to illness? With higher stress levels, such as those caused in the work place, there is an increased likelihood of getting infections or contracting more serious illnesses. As discussed previously, vacations help reduce stress, therefore preventing illness and helping you feel happy and healthier. Guess there is something to be said for those who say the beach is the best medicine!
It is time to stop vacation shaming. With all the benefits a vacation provides, it is clear that taking time off does not reduce the quality of work, but enhances it. Remember this if you ever find yourself in a situation where you feel shamed into not using your vacation days. There is no need to feel guilty for taking time off to improve your health, mind, attitude, and even productivity. Besides, what is the point of life if you only work to live and live to work? Life is meant to be experienced. Take back your time and give yourself a break now and then. Enjoy a vacation and return to the hustle and bustle of everyday life relaxed and prepared.
