Dune Allen Beach is a small residential beach community that serves as the western gateway to the wonderful world of Scenic 30A. It's located about ten minutes east of Miramar Beach off Emerald Coast Parkway. The scenic route jogs south then curves around Stallworth and Oyster Lake, where it parallels the bright white beach at Dune Allen. It became one of the first beach vacation destinations back in the late 1940s along with Grayton Beach and Seagrove Beach further down the sugary shoreline.
Dune Allen has an excellent location nestled between the gorgeous gulf and two unique coastal dune lakes where it adjoins the vast expanse of the Topsail Hill Preserve State Park. Coastal dune lakes are a rare precious treasure and found in very few other places on the planet. Tides intermittently ebb and flow across sandy dunes that border the gulf. It creates a magical mix of fresh and salted water that supports abundant wildlife. Besides Scenic 30A, these lakes are only found in parts of the Pacific Northwest, Madagascar, Australia, and New Zealand. This exotic environment of diverse flora and fauna provides a wonderful opportunity to go fishing, kayaking, or paddleboarding. Bass, Bream, and Catfish can be caught in the lakes while Pompano, Red Fish, Spanish along with King Mackerel are reeled in near the gulf.
Topsail Hill Preserve State Park covers thousands of forested acres that border the western edge of Dune Allen. It is named for the towering white sand dunes that run alongside the gulf and resemble sails on a tall ship from a distance. You can easily cross a cola-colored creek that flows to and from the gulf at Stallworth Lake to walk beside the beach dunes for almost three miles in serene relative isolation. The beach is wide open beside the soaring dunes, and the old-growth natural landscape is almost otherworldly. If you wish to hike the interiors of this park, the main entrance is right off 30A. Trails meander around two more coastal dune lakes named Campbell and Morris. The vast unspoiled forests which surround them have an almost primeval look, and sometimes you can even see deer grazing on the sea oats near the gulf around sunset.
