Scenic 30A located in South Walton is a real beauty to behold. It jogs down to the gulf side from Emerald Coast Parkway (AKA Highway 98) in Miramar Beach until it curves east at Dune Allen and then meanders beside the beautiful beaches about 24 miles over to Inlet Beach, where it reconnects to the highway. This unique part of Northwest Florida has a highly acclaimed double distinction. First of all, this gorgeous route was selected as one of only 25 "Florida Scenic Highways" due to its lovely beauty and pristine natural resources. Secondly, the sugary shoreline here has been awarded a "Blue Wave Beach" designation, which is the nation's highest honor for cleanliness and natural beauty. It is also the longest continuous line of beach designated with such status in the entire country. The sensational splendor of this two-lane road defines paradise as it hugs the forested coastline that provides stunning views of the shimmering shoreline and jewel toned waters of the glowing gulf. Public access points along the way offer convenient access to the bright beaches and emerald-toned waters.
Scenic 30A is dotted all the way down by numerous precious coastal dune lakes which are found hardly anywhere else on Earth. Estuaries intermittently cross over dunes to connect these freshwater lakes to the salted gulf. This creates a magical water composition that supports a vast amount of fish, flora, and fauna. Due to this unique natural beauty, almost 20,000 acres have been set aside for the preservation of forests and the creation of state beach parks. One of them, Grayton Beach State Park, was recently named in Forbes Magazine as being the fourth most beautiful beach in America.
Less than 20 short years ago there were only four towns along this route. They included a sandy stretch of cottages in Dune Allen, old Grayton Beach which had been established by a real estate entrepreneur in around 1900, Seagrove Beach which included old beach homes that started in the late 1940s, and iconic Seaside which received international acclaim for town planning when it was created in the 1980s. From 2004 thru 2006 picturesque perfectly planned coastal villages blossomed almost overnight. They included Watercolor, Watersound, Alys Beach, Seacrest Beach, and Rosemary Beach. Each picture-perfect coastal village has its own unique personality with architectural features that range from an Old Florida look to a Cape Cod feel to alabaster Greek Mediterranean designs to charming Dutch West Indies colonial styling. Almost all of them include restaurants, beach bars, boutiques, galleries, outdoor amphitheaters or village greens, concerts, and fun seasonal festivals. Today all these charming coastal villages on Scenic 30A running from west to east include Dune Allen, Santa Rosa Beach, Blue Mountain Beach, Grayton Beach, Watercolor, Seaside, Seagrove Beach, Prominence, Watersound, Alys Beach, Seacrest Beach, and Rosemary Beach.
